Macha
About:
‘...Macha is about a quiet rebellion, not necessarily ‘beautiful’, but not without nobility either, rough and warm-hearted and full of ripe character. It‘s witty, tenacious and defiant with an air of old fashioned peace...’
Created by Irish designer Bernice Kelly, the Macha (pronounced with a silent 'c') Jewellery line is influenced by the vintage fashions researched she carried out during her career as a fashion designer for various well known brands. Macha Jewelry was started as a hobby whilst Bernice lived in New York, her return to London see’s her collection picked up by unique jewelry store Kabiri in London. The brand maintains a low profile appeal, stocked in independent boutiques internationally.
Every piece is made using precious metals and every piece is handmade. Some piece are also manipulated further using hand crating techniques to create a tarnished and antiqued look., relishing in the unwanted, for an anarchaic rock n’ roll feel.
AW 2009 saw the launch of the men’s line. The collection was inspired by the designers own American road trip and her participation in the exhibition called ‘Rawhide’, which exposed the jewelry making craft. It led to her discovery of the ancient and beautiful art of lost wax casting, which the designer has now harnessed and added her own modern twist to by adding a blackened finishes.
New Online store for 2010
In 2010 the first UK based web store was launched, retailing a number of 'in stock' items and custom sizes, and focusing on online interaction with clients. It promises individuality through bespoke pieces and encourages clients to become involved in the creation of their own individual items.
The atmospheric photography of pieces in the store truly captures the intriguing character of the brand and allows the Macha customer to clearly view the elaborate detail of the jewelry. The site also offers ease of navigation as well as a secure method of payment for all of the highly coveted and exclusive pieces of edgy Macha design.
Macha Jewelry creator and designer, Bernice Kelly, believes the new website will make the creative process quicker and easier as she works with clients personally “I encourage each client to become involved with executing their concepts and, in turn, with the progression of the brand itself.”
